"Earthquake Shelter" Case of the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake: Causes of Death of Victims
Measures against crushing are important! Earthquake shelters were created to reduce that misfortune.
Approximately 80% of the deceased, about 5,000 people, died instantly when wooden houses collapsed and buried them. Many of those who died were sleeping on the first floor and were crushed to death. According to a summary by the medical examiner who examined the bodies, out of approximately 2,456 deceased in Kobe city, 2,221 people, or 92%, died within about 15 minutes after the buildings collapsed, with the majority having died instantly from crushing or asphyxiation.
